Clubs Start Today!

After school clubs start again today.

As I am sure your all aware we have more children attending our school now which means more clubs and more children to dismiss at 4.15pm after clubs.

We are always reflecting on our practice and amending if there is anything we feel that we can do better.

This week we are trailing a new system at the end of clubs to ensure that pupils are collected safely. Your support and co-operation in this matter is greatly appreciated.

There are 3 doors where pupils can be collected at 4.15 pm after clubs.

Door 1 - The door by the bike shed where EYFS and KS1 pupils enter the building each day.
Door 2 - The door by the hall where KS2 children enter the building and parents wait for assemblies.
Door 3 - The door on the other side of the hall by the fence.

The table below shows where each club will be dismissed each day. There will be staff available to direct you if you need any help.

Free Jump Evoluation Session

Jump Evolution are offering a free session for 30 pupils on Wednesday 9th November straight after school. This is on the basis that the session will  be used for the park to complete a fire evacuation drill which should last 10-15 minutes.

If you would like your child to take part in this, please see Mrs Taylor in the office who will provide you with an entrance ticket.

Could you design the TfL 2016 Christmas card?

Transport for London's annual Christmas card competition has begun! We would like as many Broadford pupils as possible to design a Christmas card. The winning card, selected from thousands of entries, will be made into physical and digital greeting cards and sent out to select TfL customers in December. The winner will also receive an exclusive prize!

Entry forms will be given to pupils on Monday and they should be completed and returned to Miss Chau (Redwood class) no later than Tuesday 1st November. The JTAs will then select their favourite Broadford entries which will be sent off to TfL. 

The brief: How can Father Christmas and Perry the Penguin travel sustainably around London over the Christmas period? How might Perry complete his Christmas shopping? How would Father Christmas deliver presents if his sleigh breaks down? Think about different ways we can travel sustainably: by foot, bicycle, scooter, bus, train, cable car, boat, rollerskates.

Inter School Quiz Championships

Congratulations to the following pupils for their stunning performance at the Science competition this week: Sienna Nickson, Jacob Owsley, Arhaan Kaushal and Teni Adu.

What is the Quiz Club?
Quiz Club is a unique and exciting approach to motivating, inspiring, encouraging and rewarding children in their quest for knowledge and providing them with the opportunity to celebrate their achievements as part of a high profile, national competition.

More than 400,000 children take part in the Championships annually, making them the largest inter-school competitions in the UK!

Why take part?

We believe that the Championships reinforce team work, boost confidence, encourage strategic thinking and light the fire for knowledge.

There are two national championships; The National Keystage 2 General Knowledge Championship, The National Years 5 & 6 Science Championship. Look out for updates about the General Knowledge event which takes place later this academic year.

We had to revise a lot in school to prepare for the test. The questions were really challenging and I learnt a lot. Now I know all about the periodic table!

Dubuffet Artwork

The artist Dubuffet was launched to success with a series of exhibitions that sparked enormous scandal. While the public - after the war - looked for a redemptive art and a restoration of old values, Dubuffet confronted them with childlike images with coarse textures and drab colors.

The emphasis on texture and materiality in Dubuffet's paintings might be read as an insistence on the real. In the aftermath of the war, it represented an appeal to acknowledge humanity's failings and begin again from the ground - literally the soil - up.

Art Club

In their Art Club the pupils - with the guidance of Mrs Caccavale - explored his art work and different styles. 

The children particularly liked the way he approached portraits. His style was very simple and they found it extremely accessible. Using simple lines allowed them to create a great deal of texture in the pictures.

Pet Portraits

Our Y5 artists used their time with Mrs Caccavale to create portraits of their pets - real and imagined. They used a style of collage - tearing up old newspapers and magazines and then combing that with paint. The combined effect created some very cheeky looking animals!

Which is your favourite?

Interactive Screens Installed

Our hall has seen a significant upgrade with a new screen. The old projector system was difficult to see. This screen is also equipped with Apple TV so it is much easier for the pupils to share work and presentations.

You would also be able to see these new screens around the building. Almost every classroom has been updated to incorporate the improved technology. It means that pupils can see the learning resources far more clearly and share their work.

Daniel's Gift

Mr Drakes was delighted to receive a hand carved gift - all the way from Albania! Daniel had returned home for the holidays and told his Uncle about our school. Having heard how happy Daniel was at school, his Uncle carved a gift to bring back to Harold Hill.

We're In The Paper: Star of the Week

Congratulations to Abena who has been selected as the Star of the Week. She has been a very helpful person at home and in class has been working very hard.

James Rizzi Artwork

Have you heard of James Rizzi?

James Rizzi is an artist who studied Fine Arts at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida. He came up with the idea of 3D multiples now mostly associated with his name when, having taken classes in painting, printmaking and sculpturing, he had to hand in grade work for all three subjects, but only had time for doing one. So he created an etching, printed it twice, handcolored it, and mounted parts of the one print on top of the other, using wire as a means of adding depth. Having received good grades from all three teachers, he stuck with the idea and developed it further.

Art Club

Our pupils have had great fun exploring his styles and ideas. Having researched a range of his images and techniques the children chose which they would like to develop. Over the course of 6 weeks they worked on their own piece of art - these are now displayed in the corridor.

I loved the way the colours and eyes lifted the face off the page. It was such a strong image.

Super Cyclists!

This week Phil took our more able cyclists on a bike ride out towards Brentwood, through the Harold Wood Park and Pages Wood.

We believe that these opportunities give the pupils a meaningful chance to apply and test their skills from Bikeability. It is also a valuable chance to realise the great cycle routes that exist on their doorstep.

We managed to go a very long way, through woods and on the roads. When I first did these rides I found it difficult to keep up. I am much stronger now and can't believe how far we get!

Finley's Ju Jitsu Award

Congratulations to Finley who has achieved his Yellow Belt with Orange Stripe at his second Ju Jitsu grading. We are very pleased to hear how hard you have been working on your technique. All the hard work is paying off!

Super Readers

Congratulations to our latest batch of super readers. Denisz, Plamen, Jamel and Lillie have been working hard with Miss Sparkes to complete their latest challenges in the library!

I have almost completed all of the Harry Potter books. Now I'd love to go and see the Cursed Child play in London! I've also tried to use some of Rowlings language in my own writing.

Dear Parents/Carers

Our Learning Federation Governing Board will be delighted to welcome parents and carers from both schools to Broadford Primary on Tuesday 1st November.

We will update you on the Learning Federation and how things are going. Mr Drakes will report on building works at the two sites and future plans for the Federation. You will also learn about the exciting progress in your children's education.

In addition we would be pleased to hear your views and answer any questions you may have.

Prize Raffle

• Every attending adult will be given a raffle ticket: one for each child. If you have three children in the school (Broadford or Mead) then you will get three raffle tickets.
• At the end of the session there will be a draw.
• The winning raffle ticket will have the hamper below donated to that child's class!

New Classroom Floor

This half term we have replaced the floor in Rowan class. This now means that all of the Junior corridor classes have got refreshed floors.

We're In The Paper: Conor is Star of the Week!

Well done to Conor Borrell who has been chosen as the Star of the Week for the Romford Recorder. He is one of our most avid readers and a keen fact hunter! 

We're in the Paper: STARS Award

Congratulations to our pupils from both Broadford and Mead Primary School who have received gold sustainable travel active responsible safe (STAR) status for having completed 40 different travel activities over a three year period.

The pupils were also able to demonstrate a six per cent shift away from car use with at least 90pc of children travelling by non-car modes.

Year 6 teacher Amelia Chau said: “Our families are almost all within 800 metres of the school gates, so cutting congestion, pollution and inactivity is very achievable. This event has helped to inspire our pupils to think big for the year ahead so that they can have even greater impact.”

Pupils attended a seminar at Camden Town Hall on Thursday, October, 13 to receive their award.

Environmental activities included, walk to school days, walking and cycling competitions.

These are the key skills that our children will need to learn effectively in class and to be successful later in life.
