WBD 2016: Knife & Packer Visit

Our pupils enjoyed an inspirational visit from children's authors Knife & Packer. The creators of Badly Drawn Beth has some great suggestions for how our pupils could improve their drawing and writing:

Illustrating

  • Choose simple objects to use as the subject of your story: we created a fantastic comic strip from  a sausage, hash brown and pancake!
  • Practice, practice and practice again. Work on one specific character and keep improving the drawing each time... but focus on the steps you are taking. By the end it should be easy for you to repeat
  • Keep a sketch books and pencil handy... you never know when the ideas will strike.
Writing
  • Start with the characters. Create a good one and the story will flow from that.
  • Don't expect to finish the story in one go. Quite often you will have several stories going at once. They take time to think about and decide on the best way to move it forward
  • Don't be nervous... let your imagination run wild.
I loved the illustrating workshop. Following Packer's steps helped me to produce a great cartoon. Now I think I'll have a go at doing some of my own.
