Fact Hunters: Chocolate & Lizards

Teni Adu

Parent Council Feedback:

Thank you to those parents who were able to make it to the meeting this week. We discussed three key items: the Federation proposal, plans for the expansion of the school and feedback from the new pupil survey. Full minutes of the meeting will be published shortly on the blog, but some points are worth mentioning now:

Parents suggested calling the meeting a Parents’ Forum so that it doesn’t sound so formal. The term Council implies that you have to be a member or that it is a very serious meeting – which isn’t the case. It is a chance to share our plans with you and to hear your views and ideas.
The Federation idea is exactly that… an idea. If, after discussion with Governors, it turns into a proposal then you will be given much more information about pros, cons and what a Federation actually is. However parents were interested to hear that:
o The two schools retain separate budgets
o The two schools retain separate DfE numbers and separate Ofsted inspection cycles
o The two schools retain their own staff – although they may be offered the opportunity to work or collaborate across the Federation
The Education Funding Agency (EFA) have indicated that it will be possible for the demolition of the old building to go ahead this summer. However the LA have to complete a development plan to show how they are going to expand the school between now and 2020-21.

Strangely - for an animal that lives on ice - polar bears often get hot and will roll in the snow to cool off.

Georgia Brooks
Reticulated giraffes are ruminants, and their stomachs have four parts, with food passing through the first and water going directly to the second.

Alisha March
Did you know that when David Beckham was 11, he won the coveted Bobby Charlton Soccer Schools National Skills competition? The win earned Beckham a trip to Barcelona, where he drew the attention of a Manchester United soccer scout.

Year 1 Bear Superheroes

If you go down to the woods this week you're in for a big surprise! Year 1 pupils at Broadford Primary have been dressing up as bears and completing a range of activities to raise funds for the World Wildlife Fund. In their topic they have learnt that bears are facing a number of human threats: their habitat is being cut down, global warming is melting the ice and bears are being treated badly in captivity. The pupils wanted to do something to raise money to help the charities that support the bears. First they held a Bear Hunt.

'The pupils were really excited! They had to dress as bears and hunt round the school for clues. Our best bear detectives managed to find over 30 bears hidden around the grounds. We had a dress up activity. The total raised was well over £500! A fantastic effort.'
Miss Trudie Chappel - Year 1 teacher

The money raised will help the WWF to protect the habitats of the bears, enabling them to remain in the wild. Did you know that for brown bears they now can only inhabit 2% of what used to be their habitat? Without this support the numbers of these beautiful animals left in the wild will never recover.

Circus Skills Day

Have you ever wondered if you could walk on stilts? Do you have the poise and balance to cross a tight rope? Would you be able to spin a plate on a stick? Well pupils at Broadford Primary had the chance to test their Big Top skills with a Circus Day.

The wide range of activities allowed them to test their reciprocity and team work skills:

I loved the tightrope! We had to help each other balance by holding their hands.'
Roberto Silva - Aspen

The Circus instructor showed the pupils how to balance the plates on the stick and then use a whipping motion to make them spin, before teaching them how to create swirling patterns with the ribbons.

Our children had a fantastic time. To see them accessing the different opportunities independently, challenging themselves and then showing the resilience to practise until they had succeeded was amazing. Afterwards they wanted to carry on in the classroom with chalk lines on the floor to balance on.
Miss Cat Tynan - Reception teacher

As a grand finale the children used a pair of ladders to form a human pyramid - with six of them balanced on the steps!

Daniel Kalusha
Devices that emit blue light include e-readers, tablets, laptops, smart phones and several types of flat screen televisions. This blue light has sleep-disturbing effects! So put them down before you hit the pillow.

Chloe Kirk
Tectonic plates move at the same speed – roughly – that your fingernails grow… 3.7cm per year.

Fayo Ayodola
Did you know that Columbus was probably not the first European to cross the Atlantic Ocean? Many believe that the Norse Viking Leif Eriksson landed in present-day Newfoundland around 1000 A.D. almost five centuries before Columbus set sail.

Abbie Sullivan
Incredibly the Germans were the first side to use flame throwers in WW1. Their machines could throw jets of flame as far as 130ft.

Pupils who typically read for 15mins per night are far more likely to be in the top 10% for attainment. Those who typically don't read every night are far more likely to be in the bottom 10%!
