Police Station Visit

On our visit to the police operations base this week our children learnt about a wide range of topics.

Reciprocity
"It was very exciting to hear how you have a partner and go together to respond to calls. They told us how you have to be able to trust each other... you can't be late for work or your partner will be let down" - Charlie Birdsey

Resilience
"Even when they are being provoked, they have to make sure they don't hit you on the head or vital areas with their baton. It would be very difficult to concentrate and not react" - Willian Edwards

Stranger danger
"We were reminded that strangers can be of any age, type and both male & female" - Drew Burkett

"PC Burrows told us what to do. Shout out loud 'stranger danger' and create a loud noise to attract attention from other adults" Charlie Birdsey

"I know now that we should move away from them and look for a safe place to go" Toby Smith

"PC Burrows made it clear that we should make sure we tell an adult if something suspicious happens" Sandra Diaz

Social Networking:
The children have had their e-safety training in school, but this was a good chance to remind them of the key points:

  • Don't add people you haven't actually met
  • Tell an adult if a stranger tries to add you as a friend
  • Don't give out personal information: name, age, address
  • Never go to meet someone you have only spoken to online without taking an adult with you
  • If you use online gaming, don't play with people you haven't met in person

Property Marking
Pupils were issued with Property Marking kits and shown how to mark their valuables. This can then be registered with the online account. If your possessions are stolen and recovered then the police will be able to identify them more easily.

"I went straight home and used the pen to mark my phone. Now, if it goes missing, the police will be able to help me get it back!" Aiden Paterson

Riot gear:
Finally the children got to wear the riot control clothing... it was very hot and sweaty. Daniel then practised running up and down the corridor in it. When the  police do their fitness training they have to do a 1/2 mile run in the full kit. That is because the nearest place of safety is 1/2 mile away at the Notting Hill Carnival

We were rather surprised that in their fitness test the police officers only have to reach 5.4 on the bleep test!

"I got to Level 17 last week in PE with Mr Portway... 5.4 is far too easy! Success Obazee.

Overall it was a great, hands on trip, which the children thoroughly enjoyed!
