More Cub Scout Glory!

Four pupils from Broadford Primary have been on a remarkable winning streak, claiming three prestigious Cub Scout trophies in just one month! First, the school was delighted to hear that the hard working pupils had managed to win the Maureen Preston Trophy. Holly, Jude, Nathan and Joe took part in this outdoor Scouting competition as representatives of the 3rd Harold Hill Cub Scouts.In order to lift the shield the team had to demonstrate proficiency with knot tying (including clove hitch, reef knots and bowlines), first aid (CPR and the recovery position), map reading and using a compass. The shield is to commemorate a Cub Scout leader who was very passionate about these outdoor skills and the Cub Scout movement. In fact it is the third time that the troop has won it: 2004, 2005 and 2014!


"Knot tying is one of my favourite skills. Although there are lots of different knots to remember, I have practised at Cubs and now I can perform them really quickly!" Nathan Owsley - aged 11

 "We have had lots of practise at CPR recently... so we should be good at it. At Cubs we had a workshop on first aid. In school we have been learning about the circulatory system and how to keep the heart healthy." Holly Clark - aged 10

Still glowing from their success in competing against 12 other Cub Scout teams to lift that trophy, the team was entered into the local quiz competition. Confidently answering a range of general knowledge questions, the four knowledgeable pupils managed another first place finish... and qualification for the Borough final! Not content with this success they then proceeded to win that round as well with a grand score of 86 points!

 "Without a doubt the pupils have really benefitted from the enrichment that the Cub Scout troop offers them. Camping trips, outdoor learning, practical skills and competition: all the ingredients that help to build the children's self esteem and confidence. We are very proud of what they have achieved and the great ambassadors they have been for their troop and the school!" Mr Drakes Headteacher.
