Sharing Assembly: Rowan 9.05am Wednesday 3rd December

On Wednesday 3rd we have Rowan’s Sharing Assembly. The children are really looking forward to talking about their learning so far this term. We look forward to seeing you there.

This is a change to the published calendar as Year 6 had a trip that clashed so Rowan offered to move their assembly. Thank you for your understanding!

Reading League Winners

Congratulations to the latest winners of the Reading League. With 335 points, Team Boss came top: Success, Daniel, Hakeem, Bailey & Uthman all worked well as a team to stay at the summit.

Reciprocity
"I made sure I kept checking how many points we had and doing regular reviews for Miss Sparkes. If we needed extra points I encouraged my team mates to keep reading and loaning books"
Uthman

In second place we had the Purple Hand Gang; Prince, Leo, Bryan, Lucy & Natalie. Then we had the two MVPs. Although their team did not win, they accumulated such a fantastic number of points that they clearly deserved to go to West Ham.

All of the children will be enjoying an all expenses trip to Upton Park in the New Year. Well done to all... and keep reading.

Choir - Homes in Havering

Have a look at our choir's great festive performance at the Home in Havering Christmas lunch. The children made such an impression that they were immediately asked to do an extra date at Charlesbury Crescent on Thursday 4th.

At this time of year Mrs Nicholl's team are already busy getting ready for the Young Voices concert in January. However they have made easy work of some Christmas classics.

Jaseem's Amazing Creations

Jaseem has been working very hard at home on some amazing loom band creations! He's bought in three headed dragons, a terrifying winged beast and a loom band that stretches from one end of Mr Drakes's office to the other!

Resourcefulness
"To help me put my ideas together, I had a look at designs and ideas on the internet. At first it didn't work, but with practice I managed to make the three headed dragon. I did try using pieces of coat hangar to give it more structure, but it meant there were some sharp bits sticking out."

Advent Calendar Collection

Thank you so much to everyone who donated an Advent Calendar. We collected over 100 calendars and  they will all go a long way to bringing a smile to someone's face over the advent period.

Thank you everyone.

Nature & Adventure Trail Hedge

Thames Chase Conservation Volunteers were in school this week to develop the nature trail and area. They have been busily planting a hedgerow around the fence. This will provide natural shelter for the nature garden, a habitat for animals and a screening for the ugly metal fence.

Another huge thank you to the volunteers who gave up their time to help develop our school grounds. As the ground was too soggy they have had to barrow the gargantuan pile of wood chip all the way to the back of the field. By the time they have finished over 600 plants will have been used to create the hedge.

It will take 3 years to begin to mature... so please be patient.

Autumn Term Spelling Bee

We will soon be holding the Autumn term spelling bee. This round will be held in classes and children will compete against their peers to see who can spell the most words correctly from the lists below.

The winners from the class rounds will go forward to the whole school spelling bee in the summer term. This is when we will determine who will represent Broadford in the Harold Hill spelling bee.

Last year the Broadford team came joint first. Let's make sure that we bring home the trophy in 2015!

Friends of Broadford: Christmas Bazaar

A huge thank you to all those involved with organizing and running the Christmas Bazaar last weekend. The final takings exceeded £700 and we are very thankful for all of the support that parents, friends and relatives gave to the event.

It was also great to see the pupils' running their own stall. In loom bands and hama beads club they had been making their own decorations over the last few weeks. These sold really well and gave the children a chance to develop their entrepreneurship skills!

Resourcefulness
"We had to look through the designs and decide which would be the best to sell at a Christmas Fayre. Then we selected colours that we thought were festive. I chose red and green for my designs!" - Lewis Makolli

Diary Dates:

On Tuesday we have pupils going to the Lego exhibit in Brick Lane. In the afternoon our Year 5&6 pupils have an indoor athletics festival. After school there is a netball match against St Ursula’s.

Wednesday is trip day for Year 6 as they go off to the Natural History Museum. Rowan have their Sharing Assembly on the 3rd December as well.

Thursday sees our Year 2 pupils going to play board games with Age Concern and in the evening our choir will be singing at the Light Up Harold Hill event.

Finally we have Willow’s Maths Party on Friday and the Spinebreakers taking a trip to London to hunt down the 50 Paddington Bear statues! A very busy week.

We’re In The Paper!

We have had a number of stories published recently about your children. Last week Alfie Smyth was chosen as the Star of the Week. This week we have a story published about our super Cub Scouts. Nathan, Holly, Jude and Joe have managed to win three competitions in a very short space of time: first aid, knot tying and general knowledge. We are very proud of them and their achievements!

Reciprocity
"If we didn't listen well to each other and share ideas, we never would have won!" Holly Clark

Stubbers Meeting Year 5&6 2.15pm Monday 8th December

This year both Y5&6 will be having a residential trip to Stubbers. This meeting is to let you know the details and costs involved for the trip next year. For those children in Year 5, there will not be a residential trip in Year 6 as well.

From this year on, the residential will be offered to Year 5 pupils only. Instead, Year 6 pupils will have an activity week based in school – once the exams are finished at the end of the year. Therefore you do not have to worry about a double cost!

Super Star Cooks!

Mr Borrell and our team of cooks have been cooking up some delicious recipes as they prepare for the Sainsbury's Superstar Cooks competition. First they had to plan a dish, then they had to cook it. Finally they had to present it effectively and evaluate the finished product.

Resourcefulness
"We had to think creatively with the resources that we had. Although the ingredients were simple, we wanted to make something really colourful and tasty!" - Elisa Rina

Resilience
"When we first started getting the presentation right was a real challenge. However I learnt that you need to be very gentle when you place the food on the plate... otherwise it just looks messy." Nathan Owsley

Entries that have been shortlisted will find out at the start of next month. Mrs Clements was very impressed. Judging by how she cleared her plate we should have a very good chance of being selected!

Fact Hunters: Kieran & Ollie

Kieran & Ollie have been on the hunt again. Together they have found out some terrible facts about whaling and the way it has endangered so many species.

Reciprocity
"I love working with Ollie, he's always so keen to find out more facts! I didn't know that Japan were so keen on whaling... I think it should stop!" - Kieran

Fact Hunters: Rivers, bikes and skin!

Jessica Chilvers
If you look at the Thames, it may appear dirty… but it isn’t. Many creatures live in and on the water: gulls, swans, pike, trout, flounder fish, sea horses, crayfish and even crabs!

Sophia Ehihon
Have you ever wondered why the room keeps spinning after you have stopped moving? In the inner ear, the balance system consists of three semicircular canals that contain fluid and “sensors” that detect rotational movement of the head. You might stop moving, but the liquid keeps sloshing around, telling your brain you are still spinning!

Archie Smith
Laura Trott – who is only 23 – is the most successful rider, male or female, in the history of the elite European Track Championships, with six titles as of October 2014!

Ethan Borrell
Amazingly your skin is made up of three layers, each with its own important parts. The layer on the outside is called the epidermis.

More Cub Scout Glory!

Four pupils from Broadford Primary have been on a remarkable winning streak, claiming three prestigious Cub Scout trophies in just one month! First, the school was delighted to hear that the hard working pupils had managed to win the Maureen Preston Trophy. Holly, Jude, Nathan and Joe took part in this outdoor Scouting competition as representatives of the 3rd Harold Hill Cub Scouts. In order to lift the shield the team had to demonstrate proficiency with knot tying (including clove hitch, reef knots and bowlines), first aid (CPR and the recovery position), map reading and using a compass. The shield is to commemorate a Cub Scout leader who was very passionate about these outdoor skills and the Cub Scout movement. In fact it is the third time that the troop has won it: 2004, 2005 and 2014!

"Knot tying is one of my favourite skills. Although there are lots of different knots to remember, I have practised at Cubs and now I can perform them really quickly!" Nathan Owsley - aged 11

"We have had lots of practise at CPR recently... so we should be good at it. At Cubs we had a workshop on first aid. In school we have been learning about the circulatory system and how to keep the heart healthy." Holly Clark - aged 10

Still glowing from their success in competing against 12 other Cub Scout teams to lift that trophy, the team was entered into the local quiz competition. Confidently answering a range of general knowledge questions, the four knowledgeable pupils managed another first place finish... and qualification for the Borough final! Not content with this success they then proceeded to win that round as well with a grand score of 86 points!

"In the catch phrase round we scored maximum marks and had played our joker, which meant we won by one point. It was very close!" Joe Bowden - aged 10

"Without a doubt the pupils have really benefitted from the enrichment that the Cub Scout troop offers them. Camping trips, outdoor learning, practical skills and competition: all the ingredients that help to build the children's self esteem and confidence. We are very proud of what they have achieved and the great ambassadors they have been for their troop and the school!" Mr Drakes Headteacher.

Breakfast Club

The new games and resources for the Breakfast Club have been a big hit! Everyday there are different activities for the children to participate in once they have finished their food and drink.

Reciprocity
"I loved the new games. We were the first to play Buckaroo and had to take it out of the box. Lucy helped me read the instructions so that we knew what to do!" Riley Hann

Resilience
"Once we started playing the games I didn't realise the time had gone so quickly. Suddenly Mrs King was telling us it was time to get ready for class." Jack Barnett

Breakfast Club is available every day from 7.45am - 8.30am.
We don't charge for attending, but we expect the pupils to buy some food or a drink
There is no need to book, you just turn up as you need to.

The Breakfast Club team look forward to seeing you!

Fact Hunters: Pigs, volcanoes and millipedes

Lesly Vumuka
The eruption of Pinatubo in 1991 was preceded by many earthquakes. Sadly 847 people died following the eruption. Afterwards a lake was formed in the crater, Lake Pinatubo

Roseanne Weaver
Pigs are much more tolerant of cold than heat. Pigs have no sweat glands, so they can't sweat. They roll around in the mud to cool their skin. The layer of dried mud protects their skin from the sun.

Olamide Otegbola
Did you know that the Hawaiian Islands were formed by volcanic activity? The Hawaiian Emperor seamount chain is a well-known example of a large seamount and island chain created by hot-spot volcanism

Katrina Weaver
Strangely, baby rattlesnakes are not able to rattle their tails. This ability comes later as they shed their skin. The layers form the rattle as the snake gets older.

Jacob Houlston
Some millipedes emit poisonous liquid secretions or hydrogen cyanide gas through microscopic pores on their body. Some of these substances are caustic and can burn the exoskeleton of insect predators.

Callie Barnett
Did you know there is one school – St Peter’s in York – that does not partake in the tradition of burning a 'Guy' on the bonfire, as Guy Fawkes was a pupil at the school! They don’t want to disrespect a former pupil.

Homes in Havering - Y5&6 Choir

Our Year 5&6 pupils kicked off the festive season today with a choir performance for the Homes in Havering Christmas lunch. Performing at the Hacton Lane Hall, the children sang a number of Christmas classics to entertain the residents.

At this time of year we are always grateful for the opportunity to go out into the community and show Havering residents the children of whom we are so very proud. Their performance was excellent today... well done!

Weekly Winners: Presentation, MDA, Housepoints

Presentation Award:
Well done to Dylan Vidal who has been taking a real pride in his work. It is very important that handwriting is neat, and presentation is eyecatching. Well done for taking such care with your work.

MDA Award Winners:
These wonderful children have been particularly helpful at lunchtimes this week.

EYFS & KS1 Sky Griffiths

KS2 Sophia Ehihon

Housepoints:
Red – Faringdon 64

Blue – Chatteris 54

Yellow – Dulverton 75

Congratulations to Yellow (Dulverton) who have managed to win the House Point trophy this week!

Attendance:

KS1& EYFS: Cedar 98.06%
KS2: Ash 97.4%
Overall: 94.1%

Once again our attendance has slipped under the 95% target. WE can do much better than this, but we need everybody in school every day! Missing 6% is the equivalent of losing two whole weeks of school. Well done to Cedar & Ash who exceeded the target this week.

Learning Power Awards:

These are the key skills that our children will need to learn effectively in class and be successful later in life. They all persevered when their work became challenging.  Jack Dempsey & Lillie Wicks have demonstrated effective reciprocity this week – able to listen carefully, work collaboratively and take turns. Elis Iosif has demonstrated perseverance with improving his attendance and punctuality. Well done for the improvement! Godswill Hartford has shown he can plan carefully revise ideas and talk about his learning to earn a Reflectiveness Award.

Nikola Urban has shown curiosity about her learning, made links between ideas and capitalized on resources to earn her Resourcefulness Award.

Fact Hunters: Vending machines, skin and toilets

This week we have a guest fact from Caleb. He attends Mead Primary but had heard about our fact hunter award and had a suggestion of his own...

Sydney Griffiths
Were you aware that the skin of the lip, with three to five cellular layers, is very thin compared to typical face skin, which has up to 16 layers?

Charlie Birdsey
The largest volcano in the Solar System and the largest mountain in the Solar System are one in the same: Olympus Mons on Mars. Olympus Mons is a shield volcano that towers to an amazing 26 km!

Caleb Shorter
Amazingly the population of New Zealand is around 4.4 million people; but in Japan, there are over 5.5 million vending machines! So every single person in New Zealand could have their own personal machine!

Adam Trower
On World Water Day, the U.N. offered a sobering statistic: according to its recent study, more people on earth have access to cell phones than toilets.
