Year 5&6 Real Life Learning

This academic year we have been running a project to get Year 5&6 pupils out into local businesses to hear how their maths and literacy lessons will help them to get jobs in the future.

The project is also intended to make them think about and experience careers they may not have known about. So far the children have learnt about:

  • becoming a police officer - you need good literacy skills to record all the crime details in your trusty notebook and you have to take exams to get promotion!
  • qualifying as a hairdresser - make sure you are able to talk confidently to clients and be able to estimate length (or you'll get in a lot of trouble)
  • working as a chef - you need to be an effective part of a team, use ratios to increase recipes and be able to work out timings for different dishes so it is already at the same time
  • selling and buying ships - are you aware of where the different ports are around the world? Do you know about the difference between international time zones? Are you able to calculate percentages to work out how much you'll make on a deal?
This week they visited Pizza Express in Brentwood. They met the chefs, spoke to the restaurant manager and had a go at making their own lunch!

Daniella Mazyar " I didn't realise how challenging it can be to arrange the booking for the evening meal. If too many come at once the kitchen staff won't be able to cook the food!"

Keeley King "Some of the recipes were quite complicated. You need to be a confident and quick reader so that you don't make a mistake. I'm quite good at measuring, so I think I could do it!"

Adam Trower "I didn't realise all the things you have to worry about as the manager. The toilets must be clean; the customers can't be kept waiting; the right food must be ordered; the staff need a rota... it sounds really busy!"

Kirsty White "It was really interesting to hear how the chefs had to get their qualifications. When we met them on Thursday they explained how they had gone through college, passed their exams and then got their jobs."
